On the 2nd of February, 1905, the first issue of the La Semaine de Suzette, published by Henri GAUTIER, featured the adventures of a new heroine. Bécassine was an instant success. On popular demand, she become a regular feature, and would eventually be the magazine's star.
Annaïck Labornez, alias Bécassine, born in the French town of Clocher-les-Bécasses, is easily recognizable with her round, mouthless face, Breton headdress, black bordered green and red dress and red umbrella. But beyond these easily identifiable outer elements, what really struck a chord with readers was her generosity, unfailing optimism and innocence. The adventures of this provincial who left to work as a housemaid in Paris came to reflect – well beyond her publishers' highest hopes – a period and society set for profound change.
