Filters for Recreation Vehicles (RV) and Vacation Cottages

Many sellers of filters for RV and cottage use have not given adequate consideration to the safety issue of filtered water.

As recreational vehicles and summer cottages are served by water supplies which are of variable nature, and which may not be adequately disinfected, any filter systemm used must be able to deal with:

(a) E coli and other potentially deadly bacterial contamination;
(b) Parasitic cysts such as giardia and cryptosporidium;
(c) Other forms of possible contamination during storage/periods of non-use;
(d) Easy uninstallation in periods of non-use either for storage or for re-installation inside a permanent home.

Some retailers do not consider these problems and sell products which are unable to address these problems satisfactorily. The health of customers is therefore at risk, given the increasingly common instances of bacterial and other forms of water supply contamination.

Many of our filter systems can be used on RVs and in cottages. You may select these systems under various product categories, but we recommend that any system you purchase must fulfill the following conditions:

(1) At least one of the cartridges must be 1-micron rated or lower (to remove parasitic cysts effectively);
(2) Incorporation of a UV or Ozonating component
(to de-activate micro-organisms including E.coli);
(3) Having John Guest (JG) style quick-connectors or screw-on connection to the sink faucet (to enable easy uninstallation/re-installation);
(4) If the filter system is one that requires a power supply, the voltage must be of the correct level.

When any filter system is not in use for more than three days, it should be disconnected and stored in the non-freezer compartment of a refrigerator, or re-connected to somewhere in your house for continued use, otherwise bacterial growth may occur. Changing to a completely new set of filter cartridges is also a good alternative if storage options are infeasible. When taken out for re-use after a period of storage inside a fridge, water must be allowed to run through to flush the filter system for at least 10 minutes.
