How to Check the Performance of Automatic Reverse Osmosis Cooler Systems
Methods of checking the performance of Automatic Reverse Osmosis (RO) Cooler Systems:
(a) Measure the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) Level:
Using a TDS meter and a clean container (such as a cup), measure the TDS level of the purified water (X). Rinse and refill the container with ordinary unpurified water from any faucet on the property, then measure the TDS level of the unpurified water (Y). Compare the figures: If Value X divided by Value Y gives a percentage of 20% or higher, at least one filter cartridge needs to be changed. (Note: the % figure is a n arbitrary figure, and can be varied depending on the standards you set for yourself).

(b) Water Production Rate:
Prepare a measuring cup of at least 200ml ready for use. Open the top cover of the cooler. Gently pull the product water tube feeding into the reservoir (Follow instructions to Disconnect Standard John Guest Push-In Fittings here: http://www.johnguest.com/step2a.asp ). Measure the water feed rate using the measuring cup. Time the flow for one minute. Calculate the water production rate as follows: No. of ml per minute x 60 / 1000 x 24 / 3.785 = Actual gallons per day. For example, 100ml per minute is measured: 100 x 60 / 1000 x 24 / 3.785 = 38.04 gal per day. The normal range for the system is 20 gpd or higher. Less than 20 gpd means one of more cartridges may need to be changed.
(c) Cleanliness of Reservoir:
Disconnect the electricity supply and turn off the water supply valve to the cooler. Open the reservoir and inspect the interior. If it is dirty, rinse it out by pouring reasonably clean water in, gently scrub it and drain the water out through the dispenser faucets. Repeat if necessary.
(d) UV Sterilizer:
If the cooler system is fitted with a UV sterilizer, the bulb should be changed every 12 months in order for the UV sterilizer to stay effective.
