Ultra-violet (UV) Sterilizers

A must-have add-on to any drinking water filtration system, especially for immuno-compromised persons and water systems in business locations

(unless water is boiled before drinking)

UV light destroys bacteria, viruses and many other micro-organisms by interfering with the DNA and RNA in the organisms' reproductive processes. The contact disinfectant property of UV light energy is measured in microwatt-seconds per square centimeter. Our UV sterilizers are normally of 254 nanometer wavelength, and produces from 32,000 to 40,000 microwatt-seconds per square centimeter (Note: E. coli is destroyed at 7,000 mw-s/cm2). Minimum guaranteed dosage is 16,000 microwatt-seconds per square centimetre after one year of use.

Note: 1mJ/cm2 = 1,000 microwatt-seconds/cm2
Flow Rate and Dose are Inter-dependent variables
Example using R-Can Sterilight Model S2Q (2gpm)
16 mJ/cm2 (US Public Health) 19 L/min (5 gpm) (1.1 m3/hr)
30 mJ/cm2 (R-Can Standard) 11 L/min (3 gpm) (0.7 m3/hr)
40 mJ/cm2 (NSF/EPA) 7.5 L/min (2 gpm) (0.5 m3/hr)

Adding a UV sterilizer after a water filter system will provide greatly added protection against harmful micro-organisms such as E.coli For a very useful general overview of UV, view these very useful articles by International Water-Guard Industries Inc and Edstrom Industries.

Install the UV sterilizer units only under the following conditions:
- Total Iron ------ not more than 0.3 PPM (0.3 mg/l)
- Hydrogen Sulfide ----- not more than 0.05 PPM (0.05 mg/l)
- Suspended Solids ----- not more than 10 PPM (10 mg/l)
- Manganese ------ not more than 0.05 PPM (0.05 mg/l)
- Hardness ------ not more than 7 gpg*
*Under the conditions that the total hardness of water is not more than 7 gpg and the quartz sleeve is cleaned on schedule, the UV sterilizer unit will work efficiently. If the total hardness is over 7 gpg, water should be softened.
The knack of the UV sterilizer unit lies in the special gadget irradiating water by the strong ultraviolet rays and producing pure water without bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi. Moreover, the UV sterilizer unit does not add potentially harmful chemicals to the water and it works in a safe way without keeping any disinfectants in your drinking water.

Important Notes:
(1) The life of UV bulbs are normally 8,000 to 9,000 hours (approximately 1 year)
(2) UV bulbs are normally left on 24 hours a day - Reasons: (a) a few hours life is lost whenever a UV lamp is turned on or off; (b) When UV lamp is off, there is a slight risk of live bacteria migrating from the feed port into and beyond the UV sterilizer.
(3) A UV sterilizer should be installed AFTER any water filtration or treatment system, such that the water treated should be as clear as possible to enable the UV rays to effectively irradiate and kill any microorganisms in the water.

General Installation Procedure:
A UV sterilizer can be installed either horizontally or vertically:
- If you install it horizontally, the IN/OUT ports should be positioned topmost so that air can bleed out and air pockets can be minimized.
- If you install it vertically, the OUT port should be positioned higher than the IN port for the same reason.
- After installation, make sure the tubing is inserted properly by pushing the tubing all the way into the John Guest connector fittings (the tubing will automatically lock itself in place).
- Turn on the water supply to make sure there is no water seepage from the connectors.
- Then have the transformer plugged into an electrical socket.
