Self-Cleaning Leaf Traps (Leaf Catchers) for Gutter Drainage Improvement
Self-Cleaning Gutter Leaf Traps
(also know as leaf filters, leaf catchers, leaf strainers)
The Low Cost, Efficient Alternative to Expensive Complete New Gutter System Changes - also reduces the danger, the hassle and the high cost of gutter cleaning!
Many of our satisfied customers say they're much better and more cost-effective than practically all other gutter strainer systems or gutter covers, and at only a tiny fraction of the latter's cost. Our self-cleaning leaf traps are truly way less expensive than widely advertised (hence expensive) systems.
Conventional gutter systems have leaf strainers positioned on small holes leading to the downpipes. These leaf strainers are easily blocked by just a few leaves, causing gutter overflows at times of heavy rain which may in turn result in water ingress into different parts of the house, or may even result in the gutter detaching due to the weight of the water in it.
Our self-cleaning leaf trap (see drawing) is the small box-like gadget. The round parts below are the tile cover and PVC pipe that is part of your existing drainage system.
The downpipe runs into the top of the leaf trap by about half an inch, and the leaf trap itself is fitted either right on top of the PVC pipe that your downpipe runs into right now (like in the drawing) or it can be installed higher up on the downpipe so you don't have to bend over to clean it.
The self-cleaning leaf-screen part of our leaf traps consists of a curved surface perforated with round holes. The curved surface enables the self-cleaning action by rainwater pushing filtered debris (including large leaves) out onto the grass or ground around the leaf trap, while the perforated holes on the smooth curved surface enables occasional manual removal of residual debris. Other leaf trap designs may have corrugated surfaces or concealed space which hinder rather than facilitate self-cleaning action or manual cleaning).
It's up to the homeowner where they get installed. Wherever they are installed, it is easy to clean them out without the hassle of climbing a ladder to reach the gutters. The leaf trap is normally attached to the wall with stainless steel screws and the downpipe simply runs in and out of it. If possible, install it further away from windows (especially bedrooms) so that the noise of water from the downpipe hitting the leaf traps is kept to the minimum.
Available versions:
These come with or without a cover. Our opinion is: The version with a cover is more suitable for installation near bedrooms where less noise is preferred (The cover, however, will hinder the self-cleaning capability of the leaf trap). The version without a cover is more suited for installation where the debris expelled falls onto the ground with surfaces which can be "dirtied", such as the lawn or a side yard.
Very Important:
*************
For best results, to tie in with the use of the leaf traps, any conventional leaf-strainers at the top of the downpipes must be removed, and the drain holes of gutters should be enlarged as much as the downpipe, so that most debris (including leaves) that previously may clog the leaf-strainers will be able to flow freely down the downpipes, assisted by the pressure of the rain water, and into the leaf traps which filter out any debris in the water.
*************
With the use of the leaf trap, gutter cleaning frequency can be reduced to about one-third to one-fifth, with implications for considerable savings in time or cost of gutter-cleaning in the long run. Incidences of gutter overflow caused by leaf-strainers clogged up by only a few leaves at times of heavy rain will also be almost completely eliminated.
These leaf traps can fit onto (and, like a funnel, drains into) regular downspouts with 3" x 2" cross-sections.

- Cut the downpipe to allow it to extend as far into the leaf trap as possible, such that any water splashes (both outwards, and backwards onto the wall) when the water hits the surface of the leaf trap can be minimized.
